How do you verify an Alibaba supplier before paying?
Alibaba is useful for finding suppliers. It does not remove the work of checking who sits behind a listing, who receives your money, and whether the product will actually be made as promised.
Do not treat a verified badge, years on the platform, or a fast reply as the final check. Those are reasons to start a conversation. They are not enough to decide that a deposit is safe.
Get the legal identity before you discuss payment
Ask for the full company name in Chinese and English, the business license, operating address, and bank details. The company selling to you and the company receiving money should make sense together. If the account belongs to another company, do not accept “this is normal” as the full answer. Ask what role that entity plays and who remains contractually responsible for the order.
Find out who actually makes the product
The listing may belong to a factory, a trading company, or a chain of intermediaries. None is automatically unusable. The issue is whether you know where production happens, which work is outsourced, and who can answer for a defect. Ask for current evidence tied to a similar product, not generic factory marketing photos.
Test product fit, not just supplier existence
A supplier can be real and still be wrong for you. Ask about the relevant material, process, normal order range, lead-time stages, quality checkpoints, and common failure points. A serious manufacturer can usually discuss these details without turning every question back into price.
Set payment conditions that create evidence
Before any deposit, make the approved sample, specification, quantity, packaging, delivery terms, and payment milestones clear. Later payments should follow evidence, not verbal reassurance. That can include production updates, approved pre-shipment inspection criteria, and confirmation that the shipping documents match the agreed order.
The safest conclusion is not “Alibaba says this supplier is verified.” It is “I know who this supplier is, what they control, what I am paying for, and what evidence I will require before I release more money.”
